I need to travel urgently, what can I do?
Urgent Processing
If you need your new passport sooner than the standard processing time, you may be eligible to apply for urgent processing. Please enclose a letter stating the reason for the urgent processing, together with documentary proof. You may be asked for further details. An additional fee will apply – see below. Please mark the envelope “Passport Officer - Urgent Processing”. The minimum turnaround time is two weeks but it may take longer.
Emergency Travel
If you need to travel urgently in an emergency situation, you may be eligible to apply for an Emergency Passport or Emergency Travel Document.
Emergency Passports are non-biometric passports with a limited validity of seven months.
Emergency Travel Documents are valid for a short time period and a one way journey to allow you to travel quickly, for example in the event of the death or serious illness of a family member. Please contact the the Consulate of Ireland in Jamaica or the Embassy of Ireland in Canada. As they are not valid for return travel you will need to apply for a full passport on your arrival at your destination.
The application requirements for both documents are the same as for a standard passport. First time adult applicants are not eligible to apply. See below for fees.
Emergency Passports and Emergency Travel Documents are not accepted for entry to the USA, including transit.
